Painting a Stripe?

If one where to paint a stripe running down the center line of the bike, how would I go about doing such a task? Should I lay down base color, wait for it to cure (2-3 days) wet sand with 1000-1500, then mask and spray stripe? And then wait for that to cure, wet sand again and spray the clear? Or Should I spray the base color and after it has flashed, spray the clear coat and then wait for it to cure and wet sand then mask and spray the stripe color?
