The time came for me to change out the chain, engine sprocket, and driven sprocket. I hit a few hangups though, so maybe any of you that have been through this procedure can help me along. I’m working with the Clymer manual and a 1992 bike.

For the engine sprocket it said to make sure the cutouts were facing out. I didn’t know what this meant since both my old sprocket and my new one didn’t have cutouts, but looking at some other people’s pictures I see what they mean (http://www.xjrider.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... ket#p21402). Another problem I have though is that the old sprocket fits all the way on the shaft flush with the back. The new one only fits across the grooved surface and then stops leaving a gap. It looks like the grooves on the shaft are just a hair lower than the smooth surface of the shaft. Also the inner teeth of the new sprocket are just a hair longer than on the old sprocket, and that’s what seems to be what is stopping it. I assume it should fit all the way back though especially since the nut is cut out to fit over the toothed surface of the shaft a little. Anyone know how this should be? Also, should the tabs on that lock washer line up with the hex faces of the nut? Because it looks like one will and the other will have to be bent around a corner.

The other thing I was wondering about is the bearings. I had to replace all the bearings in the rear wheel and coupling. The old right side (disc side) bearing was sealed on the outer side and open on the inner face, and the new one is completely sealed. I would guess that this wouldn’t be a problem, but the left side bearings in the actual wheel are making me wonder. Both the old ones were completely sealed and both the new ones are completely open. I got the parts on bike bandit, and they are the same sizes, but the bearings for this side are a different part number than was listed on the Yamaha catalog (mine are 93306-20335 and the listed bearings are 93306-20310-00). Do you all think this will cause problems or not really? It seems like the axle might introduce grit to the inner sides more easily. But maybe if I pack them with enough bearing grease it won’t be a problem? Also, the sealed bearings are nice because then the open bearing is not exposed as soon as the coupling is taken off since there are not extra seals on that part.

If you’ve been through this it would be nice to know what you put on. Or if you have thoughts on this that would help too. I just don’t want to go ahead and drive the bearings in if I’m going to have to take them back out and replace them in 6 months because they got gritty.

Thanks!
