I went out for a quick ride tonight and my '97 was ticking more than usual. I crawled around the front of the engine while cranking the throttle and as I was doing this, one of the exhaust header nuts fell off. I let the bike cool and refitted the nut. I found all of the header nuts loose.
A few months ago, I installed the headers with new copper gaskets. I'm assuming the gaskets crushed after a few heat cycles and the nuts loosened up.
So today's PSA: Check your nuts.
