starter issue??

i have an issue with starting once in a while. what will happen is the bike will start but if i let is stall out while it is cold the starter will just click. then i will have to put it into 2nd and roll it foreward in gear then back to neutral and it will usually turn over and then i just make sure the choke is on and all. its a 96 seca 2. was just trying to find out if its just a dead spot in the starter. or if theres another problem someone else has had with them. dont want to throw a starter at it cause i havent seen them super cheap. any advice
