I notice a distinct smell coming from the stator, starter area – smells like a combination of burnt oil and “hot” antifreeze/coolant – don’t know how exactly to describe it. Anyhow checked the stator windings visually and measured circuits and voltage everything seemed to be ok.
Checked the rectifier as well - no noticeable/measurable problems . I am thinking that the starter relay engages and perhaps does not disengage ??. Could a bad starter relay somehow “over strain” the system making this awful smell smelling like burnt electrics combined with oil.

What would actually happen if the starter relay does not turn off after start ?
