soon I am going to disassemble my engine to fix an oil leak, paint it etc... I also decided to lap the valves, they could probably use it after 20+ years and I also need to check the valve clearances. The most convenient way would be measure the clearances, order shims and while waiting disassemble the engine, lap the valves and put it all back together once the shims arrive. But since I will be lapping the valves, I suspect the clearance could change and my new shims would be less than ideal. Does anybody have some experience with this?
I know it would probably be better to lap the valves, keep the old shims, run it for a while so everything seats properly and then check and adjust the clearance, but I would prefer to do it all at once since I don't have as much time to work on the bike as I would like.
Thank you for your input
