Starter issue

Hey just got a project 95 seca ii xj600s. I put a new starter and ignition in it. Hook up the battery to it and all the lights work as they should but when i go to press the starter button the oil light comes on and theres no clicking noise or anything. Its in neutral and ive tried with the kick stand up and down. When i cross the starter relay the starter engages and turns over like it should. Anybody know whats going on or have any ideas?
