Shifting issues

Ok people, new to motorcycle mechanics and having trouble. I just got a 92 seca ii and it say in a garage for 12 years. Well I've finally rebuilt the carb enough times and set everything to make it start and run. Well now the second I try shifting into first, it immediately dies Everytime without question, and sometimes it (while off) won't even let me shift back into neutral to start it. I'm frustrated but determined. What should I do to fix this issue? And I just figured out there's no trans fluid so that tells you how much I know about bikes. Great with cars. Also what oil should I use and does it have an oil filter? Thank you
