Hey guys,
I am new to the forum and new to riding. I just bought a 1996 Seca II and was excited to start riding. I bargained down $100 based on some cosmetic issues and the fact that the bike only had one mirror. Maybe I should have paid even less. Riding the bike home, I encountered a few more concerning issues. None of which, I expect, I couldn't figure out how to repair on my own, but the culmination of them within the first 24 hours has me wanting to get the bike looked at by an experienced set of eyes.
Getting the bike back home, these are the problems that I have experienced:
- Front brake calipers completely disconnected from the cylinder/fork (bolts missing)
Solved this the next day with some bolts from Home Depot at radare and others' suggestion
- Start-up & idle problems. It will die easily when idling, around 1000 rpm. Was told the battery is new, and the batt. will turn the starter, but often struggle to start the engine. A little throttle helps kick the engine up. On occasion, pressing the ignition will do nothing at all. Hooking up a voltmeter to the battery and watching while revving the engine, voltage struggled to reach 13 V. Stayed steady around 12.3 or .4
I have gone from thinking (after a little research) possibly a rectifier issue, to being told it was a carb issue, and then an idle adjustment issue. Maybe a combination of those.
- The speedometer & odometer do not work.
Possibly a disconnect somewhere
- Gear shift lever dangling. Lost the bolt that pins it in place, still an hour from home. Got a motorcycle repair shop near where I live to come pick it up after I tried fitting a bolt to it from another nearby Home Depot. Found out that the threading is a little stripped.
At this point, I am thinking of having the shop give me an assessment and possibly having them calibrate the front brake caliper and re-tap the hole for the gear shift lever for me.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Best regards,
Kaptain
