I was riding home from work tonight and found it a bit hard to get my bike into neutral when stopped at the traffic lights. Noticed that there was too much slack in the cable and I adjusted it with the barrel at the lever. Next set of lights same thing again, and again until I used up all the available adjustment - maybe half the barrel length. It didn't seem to get any worse after that and I managed to get home with some rough gear changes and making sure I selected neutral before stopping at lights.

Neither end of the cable look like they are frayed, and in my experience they always break at the ends.

Any thoughts as to what could be going on?

I'll adjust it with the barrel down on the engine case in the morning and see if it stays adjusted...
