You'll really need to track down the wiring diagram and figure out the colors directly. On most Yamaha's, the tach signal is driven off of three wires - orange/black/brown. I'd start there. You can download an electronic manual from The Wall for the pre-diversion XJ600 which should be the same as your FJ.
