Well, I have been messing with the timing and a friend of mine made two mistakes working on the bike.. first, he lost a dowel which the center exhaust cam cap bolt would go to and doesn't know where it went.. he stated that he never heard it hit the ground which makes me worried because it is likely that it fell down into the chain "hole" area... Also, he rotated the crankshaft without the cams connected to the chain..

Someone please help me troubleshoot this and help me figure out where I should begin? I've already tried to fish the hole with a magnetic retriever however no luck on finding the dowel piece. I'm not sure if its seized because of the dowel piece that may or may not be stuck down in there or if its just a timing issue.

Also, can someone describe the reasoning why it's important not to rotate the crankshaft? I would assume it would be fine as long as the chain was connected to the sprockets of the camshafts.

Thank you all for your time and I look forward to hearing your response.
