speedo hub cleaning

I am in the process of replacing my fork seals and while removing the front wheel, the little speedometer hub thing came off the wheel. The inside is very grimy and greasy. Is it recommended to clean and re-grease it? If so, what is a good method? Thanks.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
