I'm soliciting ideas here.

I don't like the sound of my mufflers. A previous owner apparently pulled the baffles out of them, so they pop and crackle, and they're generally too loud and high-pitched. I want to make them much quieter, closer to the sound of stock mufflers. A little bit deeper note would be nice, but I don't care too much about that.

I want to modify them a bit to quiet them down, especially cutting out that high-frequency pop and crack. Does anyone have any experience with universal baffles, like these? Some guys on another forum suggested pounding those into the end of the muffler (those particular ones can be cut in half, I gather, or you can get inserts that are basically half of one of those). If I can do this without cutting the cans open, that would be great. If not, I'm open to the idea of cutting the ends off and fiddling around with the internals. It should be a cheap welding job to get them closed back up after I finish the work.

I don't have any budget at all, so buying new ones is completely out of the question. Maybe as much as $50 tops on this project, and that would have to be spread out over a couple months.

Hit me.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.
