Changing the controls

I am thinking about what I want to do to the XJ550. There are many things that I would like to change. A lot of them have to do with the dashboard and the handlebars. So, I am wondering what would be the easiest way to clean up the electrics and changing the controls on the bike. I need the electric starter, the engine electrics, the headlight, taillight and probably the indicators. I would also like to lose the huge dashboard, but I am going to need a new, simple, dash with idiot lights. And some nicer controls that are cleaner with less buttons.

Any thoughts on how to go about this?
