I have an idea that I'd like to put out there.

For those who are converting their XJ's and want to run stock Yamaha gauges from a Radian or other, one big question is how to mount the gauges to the XJ (since the XJ has no mounting bosses on its triple).

There are several other Yamaha bikes with 38mm forks. One that runs 38mm forks and also runs naked-style gauges is the XJ700 (Maxim).

What if you'd buy a cheap upper triple from a Maxim (like this one for $13) and perform some surgery on it. That is, cut it as noted below:

After cleaning up things with a grinder, you'd have a pair of gauge mounts that could be clamped to the XJ forks, just below the upper triple, that would support Radian or other Yamaha gauges and for dirt-cheap when compared to buying steering-damper fork clamps:
