Cant get the oil filter off

Alright guys so this might be a really stupid question but I was trying to do an oil change the other day. I went out and bought some oil and a new oil filter. I warmed up the bike and rode it around for a bit. Once I parked it I tried to loosen the oil filter before I opened up the oil screw but the damn filter did not want to come off. It looks like I crunched the oil filter a little bit in the process. Now my question is: these filters are lefty loosie right? And if so are there any tips on how to get the thing to unscrew? I was using a clamp type oil wrench and really giving it my all but the thing did not want to come of!!! Thanks for your help guys. This would be my first "real" maintenance on the bike aside from cleaning and lubing the chain so I'm a little nervous about the whole ordeal.
