Speedo not working.

Just picked up a 91 XJ600 and on the ride home noticed the speedo doesnt work. Undi the cable from the hub and spun it by hand and the needle moves so not the cable. What's the process now for sorting the problem out? Pull the wheel off? I am mechanically inclined just never worked on bikes before. Any advice or places I can check for threads similar would be great.
