On my oil pan of my 1992 I had something strange (and now broken from a wheelie :p)

I have a stud, with a plastic cap that was sealing the oil in, I cracked this cap playing on the bike a little too rough, and dumped oil all over my vance and hines.
Anyone know the purpose of this? Ease? Can I just through a plug with a copper crush washer in it? What size is the plug supposed to be?
