Digital Gear Display

I saw one of those digital gear displays on eBay and was wondering if anyone has had any experience of them. They appear to be a simple digital counter with a magnet supplying the proximity signal to the sensors. Have any of you fitted one? Are they reliable or a waste of time and money? I found the digital gear display useful on the SFV650 that I learnt on but that was a new bike and not a 23 year old XJ!
