Fork Tubes?

Okay so my my new XJ600 was leaking oil from the front wheel forks and my "mechanic" is,trying to convince me that there is rust on the fork "tubes" and the new seals that I had him order won't work. He says that I need to get new forks. His credibility is a little on the low side. Is there anything to this claim? The forks look fine to my untrained eye. The bike suspension,seems okay.
