Well, this is my first post in a long time.

Spring comes late to my neck of the woods, but I took even longer to get the XJ on the road since I did a carb rebuild and did it rather late in March rather than earlier in the winter.

Got the bike running and after a few days of riding it developed a really menacing sounding growl at 3,000rpm+. If it was "normal" sounding for this bike, it would be kind of cool, but it doesn't seem like it would be good in the long run.

So, I checked valve clearances and a few of them were off by a fair bit. Took me a month to get parts and shims in (and had my tools stolen at one point...argh!).

Anyway, got it back on the road today...still growly. I used an IR thermometer on my pipes and #1 is definitely running cooler than the rest. I'll have to make some adjustments there.

It rides smooth, the growl isn't affecting vibration or anything. It just doesn't sound right and I'm not trusting it for riding to work at the moment.

I am wondering if it could be some kind of carbon build-up or a restriction in a muffler...?

Sorry if my description is a little vague.
