Need a little advice on this one, and I've read as many post on here as I could find...Clymer manual and the factory manual both say to measure clearance at tdc per cylinder with lobes pointed away from the valves (I know you've all heard this before). Haynes says 180 from the valves. I took measurements at both and there are differences.
The Forum/Haynes way in mm
Cylinder 1 intake .10 exhaust .21
Cylinder 2 intake .11 exhaust .21
Cylinder 4 intake .05 exhaust .20
Cylinder 3 intake .14 exhaust .18
Clymer in mm
Cylinder 1 intake .11 exhaust .21
Cylinder 2 intake .11 exhaust .19
Cylinder 4 intake .09 exhaust .19
Cylinder 3 intake .13 exhaust .20
Now, I know the manuals say do the measurements at room temp, well my shop room temp was probably just climbing to 10 degrees C, the bike was colder. I ran through each test a second time, starting at 1 again and came up with the same numbers.
So what do i do with these numbers, it seems like the round side of some of my lobes (especially #4) are out of spec, but i couldn't feel or see any bumps, scoring or discolouration. Do I take the worst of both a re-shim? Sorry, no shim numbers yet, thought i had a tool but couldn't find it. I'll pick one up tomorrow, they're about $12 bucks for the kawasaki one that Oldman1 likes.
Specs are intake .11-.15 and exhaust .21-.25
thanks for the help
