Header wrap

I've had my header wrap for a few weeks now, I haven't wrapped it yet because i won't be putting the exhaust back on the bike for some time and i'm unsure if it's safe to do it now (I know you use the heat of the exhaust to dry/shrink the wrap so i'm guessing it won't be as good if i skip that job) However; since buying the wrap i've heard from so many people that if i install it, it will bassically ruin my headers. Is this true?
