changing carb position

Hello everyone ill try and keep it simple i am trying to turn a 96 xj into a cafe racer sort of machine although im not totaly strict on looks i dont want a street fighter look (no offence) i really want to change the tank but as the carbs stick up right in the middle of everything my options and whole lowering the look of the bike are buggered. Can i straighten out the way the carbs join the engine block ? as you all well know they are mounted on stacks that curve up so as to meet the air box but i want them sticking out straigt more like the old honda cb look this then gives me a much better canvas to work with and gain the overall look i want with simple k and N air filters any help much appriciated cheers
