Oil change questions

Ok I know this has probably been asked before, but i did a search and never really got a clear answer. I am wondering how often I should be changing my oil. I usually hear every 3000 miles which is what i expect would be normal, but I saw in the Haynes manual it says every 4000 miles. Also about 90 percent of my mileage is on the highway. I use it as a daily commuter and put about 500 miles a week with about 450 miles of it being hwy. Not really riding it too hard with top speed about 75-80 but usually stay around 65-70. So if possible I would rather go as long as safely possible between changes rather than changing the oil every month and a half, but at the same time want to keep the bike running good for as long as possible.
