How do you properly raise an XJ600 without center stand?

Sorry to ask this but I barrowed my dad's motorcycle floor jack and want to know how to go about lifting the bike up? Is it ok to jack up on the exhaust system? Or do I need to use some 2x4 on the sides to get to the frame? Pics would help, I feel like a moron asking about this by the way
