Shifting issues

Just took my MSF a week and a half ago. Got my license a week ago and bought a 93 Seca II off a friend of a friend on friday. I've been riding it like crazy but don't know bikes well. I was having problems having it downshift, like it wanted to just lock but it was 2nd or 3rd gear. It's a little intermittent and I can make it work. It also occasionally wouldn't reset while upshifting. I would go to second from a stop and then when I needed to shift to third it wouldn't because the shifter was stuck up. Id have to pull the clutch in a very lightly tap the shifter down an then it would shift to third. Today it started doing it virtually on every upshift. So after every upshift I have to tap the shifter back down. It's colder today than its been since I got it but that's the only thing different. Anyone have this problem before, is there a spring that might be broke or out of place?
