My XJ has a stripped starter gear. How do I fix that?

The starter gear on the XJ is part of the output shaft and not removable without disassembling the engine. To access and replace it, the engine must be removed, the engine cases separated and the transmission removed.

Here are my notes from my starter gear replacement on my '92 Seca II.
