Wider Rear Tire?

So I would like to put as fat as a rear tire as I can on my stock rim. Does anyone have any info for me on this? Can it be done without jeapordizing the bike? Also if it can be done how fat could I go and would I need to compensate for the front tire as well? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
