Fuel Gauge fluctuating.

Has anyone experienced a fluctuation of the fuel gauge needle on an XJ900? It was fine until I filled the tank to the neck but now keeps going up to full and back to empty as I ride. It is entertaining but not very useful when it comes to estimating the fuel level! Any ideas what the problem might be?
